European standard (DIN)
The following pressure tables show the highest permissible internal pressure levels in bar as per DIN 2413 (June 1972) for non-corroding pipes made of stainless steel (material number 1.4306).
The calculation is based on the following formula (derived from DIN 2413):
At temperatures of up to 120°C:
P = 20 · σzul · vN · sv / da
At temperatures of over 120°C:
P = 20 · σzul · vN · sv / di + vN · sv
P = maximum internal pressure, bar
da = outer diameter of the pipe, mm
di = inner diameter of the pipe, mm
sv = minimum wall thickness, mm
vN = characteristic calculation value of the weld seam = 1.0
σzul = permissible tension, N/mm2
Relevant pressure levels for other austenitic stainless steels are arrived at by multiplying the values in the pressure tables with the factors from the materials table.
The calculations are based on a 1% twist limit as per DIN 17440 (December 1972) using the safety factor of 1.5. A minimum tolerance of 12.5% of the wall thickness (tolerance class T2) was taken into account in the calculation. For wall thickness tolerances of 10% (T3) please pay attention to the footnote below the tables.
The characteristic calculation value for welded pipes was set at 1.0. For lower figures the pressure is worked out by multiplying the values in the pressure table by the respective characteristic value.
The DIN 2413 standard applies generally to pipes in pipeline construction. For boiler and superheater pipes you need to observe the Technical Rules for Boilers (TRD) and for pipes as components of pressure containers the relevant AD bulletins.
Note:
External forces, thermal stress, inherent weight etc. can have a bearing on the dimensioning of a pipe system. Constructions should there also be tested for mechanical strength under operating conditions.
The following example shows the calculation of the maximum internal pressure of a pipe (material number 1.4301) for liquids up to 200°C with an outer diameter of 18 mm and a wall thickness of 2 mm:
